Small TownBig cities are in an excellent position. Whenever they need cash, they have the population power to get it from the government. Multi-million, even billion-dollar projects can be obtained, but what do small towns do? Often, small towns are lost amid the shuffle as larger centers get most of the attention, and the money.

Well, while you may not be able to get hundreds of millions of dollars for your community from the government, there are small town grants that do exist. These grants can help your community with a variety of projects, from culture and education to fitness and the environment.

Federal Programs

There are many programs operated by the federal government for small town grants. These can range over a number of areas, and there is not enough room here to speak about them all. To help though, we will look at some programs that can help the most.

One of the top programs is the Rural Community Outreach Program offered by the Foundation for Rural Service. This federal program is part of an ongoing commitment to rural communities across the country. The communities who receive grants from this program can use them in four major areas including Business Development, Community Development, Education and Telecommunications.

Another grant, this one offered through the Department of Agriculture, is the Rural Business Enterprise Grant Program. This program helps to finance small and emerging businesses in small towns by offering $10,000 to $500,000 in grants. In order to qualify, the business must be in a location of less than 50,000 people.

For communities of less than 10,000, there is the Federal Funding For Small Community Wastewater Systems. This program provides a means to find the grant programs from the government to help with wastewater systems. These programs come from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Commerce.

State Programs

One program through a state government is the Rural Development Division. This division exists to provide resources and services for economic prosperity and growth of small communities through a variety of resources. Each state is going to have something similar to this, possibly under a different name.

Once again, there are simply too many grants through states to name, but here are a few that offer the same template as other states.

The Small Town Economic Assistance Program is offered through the State of Connecticut and it allows for the construction of commercial and industrial structures, recreation and waste disposal projects, social services, housing projects, historic preservation and more. In order to receive $500,000 per year, towns must be designated as a distressed municipality.

In Hawaii, one program that is offered is the Small Town Planning grants program. This offers funding for a verity of planning projects in small towns. It is not for funding fundraisers, events, projects that are redundant or capital improvement projects. Each year, roughly $243,000 is awarded through the program.

Other Programs

Outside of federal and state programs, there are private grants that are offered. Again, there are many types of sources for grants in this category, each with different criteria.

One program is the Hart Family Fund for Small Towns, which encourages the preservation at the local level y providing seed money for preservation projects in small towns. Grants range from $2,500 to $10,000, with all the money going to preserve historic buildings.
