They are issued by the City of Charlotte itself and by a few private foundations based in the area. These grants support a number of local causes that help strengthen the community and make the city a better place to live. Charlotte grants are mainly offered to local non-profit organizations. They fund neighborhood projects and many other types of community support. Several programs offered by the city offer individual assistance. These programs provide funding to low-income home buyers and offer rental and utility assistance.

Blumenthal Foundation Grants
If you live in Charlotte, you’ve probably heard of the name Bluementhal. This private foundation was founded in 1953 and was further endowed by the estate of family patriarch I.D. Blumenthal following his death in 1978. It continues to this day to be run locally by the Bluementhal family. All of its grant support is issued to projects and programs in the Charlotte and greater North Carolina area. Grants are only provided to non-profit organizations and focus on nine types of initiatives. These include arts, culture, education, environment, health and social services. The foundation also makes investments into religious organizations that support Jewish and interfaith philanthropy. Charlotte Mecklenburg Community Foundation
This community foundation was created in 2001. Its charitable endowment funds investments in Mecklenburg County only. Grantmaking is provided to make a difference in civic, social, environmental and economic issues facing the Charlotte area’s most populated county. City of Charlotte Grants
The city provides a large number of grant programs to help local residents. These include housing programs like HouseCharlotte that will pay a down payment and closing costs for families buying homes in eligible neighborhoods. The city also offers programs that assist low-income residents with rental and utility payments. Neighborhood groups can apply for matching dollars through Neighborhood Improvement Grants. This funding can be used to support projects such as landscaping, community gardening and playground installation. Crime and Public Safety Grants are available to fund community patrol, fire safety and other crime prevention programs. The city also offers funding for after school and senior citizen programs that involve music, art and recreational activities. These grants will pay up to $3,000 each and can also be used to fund field trips within Mecklenburg County.

Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina Foundation
This private foundation is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Its overall mission is to support charitable, religious and educational causes in North Carolina. Grants are provided to non-profit organizations who hold 501c3 tax-exempt status. Grants are awarded during three yearly grant cycles. The application process begins with a telephone inquiry.
